Bobby Sherman in TV Guide-1970

In 1970, age 11, I wanted to be Bobby Sherman. I wore love beads, a leather vest with fringe and even tried to grow my hair longer...not that my parents let me grow it very long. I wanted to be Bobby because Bobby was cool but most of all because my 11 year-old "girlfriend" had a crush on him...as did hundreds of thousands of 11 year old girls around the country!

Bobby had actually, I found out later, been alleged to have been involved in a bit of a scandal at the beginning of his career. I won't go into it here except to say that his family-friendly success on HERE COME THE BRIDES and on the Woodstock-era pop charts seemed to show that all was forgiven. I do have to wonder, though, if that scandal might be the reason he has avoided publishing an autobiography or participating in the book on HERE COME THE BRIDES that came out a few years back.

The Munsters in Color

THE MUNSTERS premiered (in black and white) exactly 48 years ago today. There have been several attempts at revivals, all of which miss the point that the monster backdrop is NOT the reason the show worked. Rather, the show's success was due to the wonderful comic teaming of Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis. This year in 2012 they're trying it again in a darker version. Here are some rare color looks at the original cast from the TV series and its theatrical spin-off in '66.

Paperback TV # 1

Here, in 1970, was only the second time I was ever able to see it in color as we had gotten our first color TV set in August of 1968. I even got the record advertised here in the Singer tie-in ad.

The New TV Season--1972

The difference between now and forty years ago is that I can name about three of this season's new TV shows and I have little desire to see either of those. Ah, but this week in 1972, look at all the shows and specials that TV GUIDE introduced us to that are now considered classics of the medium. And even the failures were more interesting than most of last season's hits here in the present day!
